A lifetime of inspiration captured in watercolour - New Book Review

Posted by Claudia Jackson-Berettoni on April 25, 2018 (0 Comments)

If you have been considering taking a peak at my new book 'A lifetime of inspiration captured in watercolour' then do take a look at this review by Graham Ironside, Editor, Calendar from 1974 to 1982, then Controller, Regional Programmes, 1982 to 1992.

'There can’t be many better ways to get to know the Yorkshire Dales than to take a day out in the summer sunshine, especially with a camera poised to capture those picture postcards awaiting at every turn.

But to really get to know the Dales, in their real life, day by day, ever-changing forms, you need a lingering glance – more than one! -- through Ashley Jackson’s new book, his personal selection from the many pictures he’s painted of the Dales over his lifetime as a watercolour artist.

There are about 60 here, beautifully illustrated, every one reflecting the Dales in a different mood. From “Passing Storms” to “Coming Home Before The Rain”, Ashley reveals the endless variations the light can cast on his favourite scenes from raging blizzards to sedate sunsets.

As a 16-year-old art student, he vowed he would never become “a genius of the chocolate box” – and these paintings confirm how well he stuck to his vow. Here he’s captured the Dales as few people, apart from those who live there, ever see them. And what drama he has captured. A book to savour and linger over …'

Walker Morris launches its Children’s Charity Calendar Painting Competition

Yorkshire’s primary school age children are being invited to take part in this year’s annual Children’s Charity Calendar Painting Competition, now in its 24th year.

Law firm Walker Morris is encouraging all children of primary school age across the Yorkshire and Humber region to win prizes for themselves and their school by painting a picture that illustrates their favourite month of the year. The chosen 13 winners, which includes the coveted front page winner, will each receive a hamper full of artists’ materials and a £250 cheque for their school. The runners-up will also receive a prize each.

The winning entries will be used to create a calendar sold in aid of Martin House Hospice. Martin House cares for children and young people with progressive life limiting illnesses and provides support to their families across Yorkshire both at the hospice and in the community.

The competition, which attracts over 2,000 entries each year, will be judged by renowned Yorkshire artist, Ashley Jackson, David Smedley from Walker Morris and Dean Poole from West Yorkshire Printing.

David Smedley commented:

“We are excited to launch the 24th Children’s Charity Calendar Painting Competition. The Calendar Competition is truly a fantastic competition and is testament to the hard work and creativity of the children that have taken part over many years. The success of the Calendar Competition depends upon nurturing the talents of our aspiring future generations which would not be possible without the full support of schools and teachers. We are already looking forward to seeing the artistic talent and imagination from this year’s entrants, let’s make it the best year yet!”

Ashley Jackson added:

“It feels like only yesterday that the Walker Morris Calendar Competition was first launched and I cannot believe that we are now about to launch the 24th Children’s Charity Calendar Painting Competition. In all honesty each year has been as exciting as the one before as it is the children’s bright and imaginative paintings that keep the calendar contemporary and makes the process of judging so difficult. Children are at the very heart of the competition from the individuals who enter to Martin House Hospice that benefits from the funds raised. If you are a parent, guardian, governor or teacher reading this please consider inspiring the next generation of children to enter from your school. You might be surprised by the results! Let’s get those paints, pencils and felt tips out and work together to make this one the best calendar yet.”

To enter, please send the painting with a completed entry form firmly attached to: Walker Morris, Kings Court, 12 King Street, Leeds, LS1 2HL before the closing date on Friday 20 July 2018. To obtain a copy of the entry form, please contact a member of the Marketing Team on 0113 283 2500 or download a copy here.
